The Physical Fitness Guide for Hajj: Tips for Elderly and First-Time Pilgrims
4 minute read
Performing Hajj is a beautiful spiritual milestone, but it is also one of the most physically demanding journeys of your life. Over the five days of Hajj, you will walk several kilometers under the intense Saudi heat, especially during the moving days of Mina and Arafat. For our elderly parents or those embarking on this journey for the first time, physical preparation is a form of worship that shouldn't be overlooked.
The best way to prepare is to start a safe walking routine right now, months before your departure. Begin with short, 15-minute daily walks at a comfortable pace, and gradually increase the duration to an hour.
If possible, practice walking during the warmer parts of the day to get your body used to moving in higher temperatures. This builds the cardiorespiratory endurance you will desperately need when navigating the massive crowds.
Once you are on the ground, managing the environment is all about smart pacing and hydration. The heat in Makkah and Madinah can easily cause dehydration or heat stroke if you aren't careful.
Make it a strict habit to carry a refillable water bottle everywhere you go, sipping from it constantly even if you don't feel thirsty. Use a lightweight umbrella to shield yourself from direct sunlight, and always listen to your body—rest in shaded areas whenever you feel fatigued. Taking care of your physical health ensures you have the strength to focus entirely on your prayers.
